On August 19, 1863, Benjamin Drummond escaped from his Confederate captors and rowed out into the Gulf of Mexico where he was taken aboard the USS Katahdin, a Union gunboat. The logbook of the Katahdin noted that Drummond was one of the former crewmembers of the "U.S.S. Morning Light, captured and burned some months since." This is a digital copy of the original record held by the National Archives.
