Regarding the item for fencing the lot, if the work is well done, owing to the continuing high price of materials, and the constantly advancing price of mechanical labor, I believe it will cost the sum estimated, viz. $8,000.00.
In order to reduce the item of $5,000.00 for providing sidewalks $6,000, and a large share of the grading that is on Penn. Avenue which the government is bound to execute, I called on the Commissioner of Public Buildings, under whom such work is usually done, to ascertain if he could do that part of the work, but his reply to my application was, that he had no funds to to apply to that purpose, so that item must stand as it is.
From present indications from the continued high cost of materials and the advance in price of labor, I believe the item of $4,500.00 for the out buildings, ought not be reduced.
And to conclude, I have, through my investigations and enquiries come to the conclusion, that the amount of the estimate ($30,000) ought to stand as originally made.
