Kearney, John A. Surg. at Marine Barracks 9-20-34 to 5-25-36, senior to Washington but Marine Barracks only detail.

NAME: Jackson, Samuel

RANK: Surg.

DATE REPORTED: 5-5-35

DATE DETACHED: 5-8-39

NOTES: Duty Navy Yard.

There has been an Asst. Surg. Foltz, Jonathan, at Navy Yrd from 6-30-34. On 5-4-35 he was ordered to hospital attached to Marine Barracks. Letter show that 1836-1837 he was in charge at Navy Yard and Barracks while other Medical Officers were fighting Indians.

This Indian campaign must have been additional duty as Jackson was not detached from Navy Yard until 5-8-1839. It appears excess sick were taken care of at the Marine Barracks and this continued until the hospital was established at the Insane Asylum 1861. Sometime between 1850 and 1861 this was the only hospital in use, Navy Yard hospital evidently discontinued. Kearney also at Barracks from 6-25-1837 until 3-18-1842. For some reason Kearney while senior to Jackson and Edwards did not have charge of Navy Yard hospital.

NAME: Edwards, David S.

RANK: Surg.

DATE REPORTED: 5-8-39

DATE DETACHED: 6-24-41

NOTES: Duty at Navy Yard.

Kearney was not detached from Marine Barracks until 1842. Edwards apparently in charge of both hospitals.
